Struggling in debut matches is not an intriguing factor. Many debutants who figured their way into the squad have been there. But there is an exception in the case of Suryakumar Yadav aka SKY. He asserted this statement while emerging victorious vs Sri Lanka with the man of the series.
31*, 53, 40. This has been his figures in the One day series, and that too in a scoring rate of 122. The man maintains a prodigy status in making effective use of his chances. His debut T20 series resembles the same with him scoring a quality 50 right on debut. Ironically, SKY hasn’t botched a single innings he went through with scores above 30 in all of them.
SKY’s retaliation on IPL is one of the impressive things he displayed. He emerged as one who’s capable to pile up 400+ runs in 3 consecutive seasons from a man who couldn’t even cross 200. Only a single 50 came from his bat from 2014-17 while he played 41 innings. 2018-20 was his career’s turn for the best. Those three seasons ended up in him securing 10 fifties. This awarded him maiden call-up to the national squad and as we all witnessed SKY welcomed it with both hands.
Suryakumar got a buzz during these days to join the test squad in England. This ought to be the big break he might be looking for. Out of the tournaments he was a part of, the test series in England is without a doubt, the one he should watch out for. As certified by SKY, let’s hope that he stomps onto his opportunity in the red ball formats too. He has however, shown no signs of deterioration so far in international cricket. There are no assurances he will be in the playing eleven, but if the slight chance comes up, we can’t ponder over his failure, because the man is most likely in his peak period.
